  • Roy Arden

    Roy Arden (b. 1957 in Vancouver) lives in Vancouver; the primary subject of his photographs. Arden graduated from Emily Carr College of Art and Design with a bachelor in Photography and Interdisciplinary Studies in 1982. He has been exhibiting since the late 1970s and in the past 5 years has produced digital video works. Recent solo exhibitions include Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, England and Galerie Tanit, Munich, with forthcoming ones at the Charles H. Scott Gallery and the Vancouver Art Gallery. His work has been included in significant groups exhibitions such as the Busan Biennale 2004, Kunstmuseum Basel, 2004, Intertidal: Vancouver Art and Artists, Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst, Antwerpen, 2006 and the major photography exhibition organized in conjunction with the 2005 reopening of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

    Peter Culley was born in Sudbury, Ontario in 1958.

  • Jeff Derksen

    Jeff Derksen, (b. 1958), is a cultural critic and a poet who works at Simon Fraser University. Derksen graduated with distinction from the David Thompson University Center in 1984 with a bachelor in Arts and Science. His writing on art and culture has appeared in Springerin, Hunch, C magazine, Open Letter, Poetics Journal, XCP, amongst others. He has two books of critical essays forthcoming: After Euphoria: art / space / neoliberalism (EC Press/JPR Ringier), and Annihilated Time: Poetry and Other Politics (Talonbooks). Derksen was a research fellow at the Center for Place, Culture, and Politics (CUNY Graduate Center) and is a founding member of the Kootenay School of Writing. Under the name Urban Subjects, he collaborates with Sabine Bitter and Helmut Weber on curatorial projects and visual research.

  • Donna Leisen

    Donna Leisen studied at Emily Carr College of Art and Design and Vancouver Community College, graduating in Photography, Printmaking and Jewellery Art and Design.

    Her work consists of 19th Century photographic printing techniques, the Van Dyke and Cyanotype, hand bookbinding, photo-etching, as well as works in metal, primarily silver, gold and niobium, with a special interest in ancient Greek and Roman metal working techniques.

  • Doug Munday

    Doug Munday graduated from Emily Carr College of Art and Design in 1986 obtaining a bachelor in Interdisciplinary Studies.

  • Cate Rimmer

    Cate Rimmer, 1961, is a curator from Calgary, Alberta. She was the founding Director/Curator of Artspeak Gallery, Director of Truck Gallery and was a Curator in Residence at the Saidye Bronfman Centre in Montreal. Rimmer has published reviews, articles and catalogue texts. She received a diploma in Curatorial Studies from Emily Carr and graduated with a MLitt (with distinction) in Museum and Gallery Studies from the University of St Andrews, Scotland.

  • Scott Watson

    Dr. Scott Watson is Head and Professor at the Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory and Director/Curator of the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery at the University of British Columbia. He is Director and Graduate Advisor for the Critical Curatorial Studies program, which he helped initiate in September 2002. Watson has published extensively in the areas of contemporary Canadian and international art and who’s research focus is contemporary art and issues, art theory and criticism.

    “Behind the Sign” an exhibition of collaborations between writers and visual artists, will be shown at Artspeak Gallery from September 10 to October 1, 1988. Over the past eight months, five visual artists and five writers have collaborated in pairs to develop works for this exhibition. The list of participants reveals an impressive array of talent from Vancouver’s visual art and writing communities: Stan Douglas and Deanna Ferguson; Roy Arden and Jeff Derksen; Donna Leisen and Calvin Wharton; Doug Munday and Kathryn MacLeod; Sarah Leydon and Peter Culley.

    The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue with texts by Scott Watson, Cate Rimmer, and Miriam Nichols.
