Hachivi Edgar Heap of Birds

Heap of Birds received his M.F.A. from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and has undertaken graduate studies at the Royal College of Art in London.

Heap of Birds has presented public commissions at Times Square in New York City, The Banff Centre in Alberta, and in Derry, Northern Ireland. Solo exhibitions have been opened at the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, Exit Art in New York City, the Walker Center in Minneapolis, and Matt’s Gallery in London.

He has served as visiting lecturer in numerous art programs including Yale University in New Haven, the Whitney Museum Independent Studies Program in New York City, the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia and the University of Ulster in Belfast.

In 1989, Heap of Birds was the recipient of the National Arts Award from the Tiffany Foundation in New York. His teaching committments at the University of Oklahoma are in the areas of painting, drawing and conceptual workshops.

    Hachivi Edgar Heap of Birds’ works of art are created from concepts and images that present a pulse of forms in action, reflecting the constructive and destructive politics of daily life. The works are based in a broad range of media, namely, drawings, prints, non-objective paintings and textual messages deployed through posters, billboards and digital signs.
