NICK LOEWEN
Nick Loewen is an artist historian who plays with older ‘new media,’ and explores the memories and possible futures of obsolete information technologies. They live on the territory of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw, xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ peoples. They have a bachelor’s degree in studio art (2015) and a master’s in art history (2021) from the University of British Columbia, and they spend their weekends making comics and animations with kids at Arts Umbrella.

Nick Loewen and Yasmine Whaley-Kalaora have spent nearly a year reorganizing Artspeak’s publication and library collections, all the while exchanging passages from Artspeak’s bookshelves and their own. Having unwoven and re-knit these excerpts into a new text—the process of which, among other things, considers the mutability of citations—Nick and Yasmine invite you to come listen to, read, and unravel their work for this edition of Speakeasy: Salon.
Speakeasy: Salon is an event series that interrogates Artspeak’s mandate to encourage a dialogue between visual art and writing. In this incarnation, speakers present within the conversational salon format on wide-ranging subjects including art, music, literature, politics, popular culture, and science. Speakers select their own topics for discussion and are not expected to be experts in the subjects they present. Speakeasy: Salon references both the demand for interdisciplinary learning in contemporary art and writing practices and an interest in the informal academic institution.
