Sol Hashemi views his artworks as mushrooms popping up occasionally from a vast mycorrhizal web. His practice spans many niches, including foraging, woodworking, experimental product photography, stoneworking, cooking, organizing, conceptual floral design, writing, conversation, curating, brewing, and the internet. He has exhibited his work internationally, including the James Harris Gallery (Seattle), Annarumma Gallery (Naples), Sculpture Center (Long Island City, NY), Ditch Projects (Springfield, OR), Portland Art Museum, and Kunstverein Munchen. Hashemi was a founder of the art space Veronica (Seattle) and is a recipient of the Kayla Skinner Award from the Seattle Art Museum.

Sol Hashemi will discuss the saloon as a significant space for the working class, and how it functioned as an informal place to gather – for leisure, to share ideas, and organize. This Speakeasy event will take place as part of the Vancouver Art Book Fair, to mark the launch of Hashemi’s photo book Excerpt From Baker’s Dozen.
Speakeasy: Salon is a series of talks and presentations that interrogates Artspeak’s mandate to encourage a dialogue between visual art and writing. In this incarnation, speakers will present within the conversational salon format on wide-ranging subjects including art, music, literature, politics, popular culture, and science. Speakers select their own topics for discussion and are not expected to be experts in the subjects they present. Each session ends with a conversation between participants and speakers, creating an opportunity for the exchange of ideas and critical discourse, and a mutual scholarship of the topics explored. Speakeasy: Salon references both the demand for interdisciplinary learning in contemporary art and writing practices and an interest in the informal academic institution.
RSVP to join in-person (first-come-first-served) for free via Eventbrite.
The option to participate via Zoom may become available based on demand. Please RSVP to join online by emailing email@example.com with the subject line “Speakeasy: Salon RSVP” no later than Thursday, October 21, 2021 at 4:30pm PST.
